      > One with 24 words .one with 25 words, right?.

Well let’s call it the bip39 passphrase, because it should not be a word (so 25th word is not a good terminology).

It’s like having a set of accounts derived from your 24-word phrase, and another completely different set of accounts derived from BOTH the 24-word phrase AND the bip39 passphrase.

If you lose your ledger and your 24 words phrase, you will not be able to ever access your passphrased accounts. The passphrase AND the 24 words are needed to access them.

The [passphrase](https://www.ledger.com/academy/passphrase-an-advanced-security-feature) does indeed serve as a way to partition your accounts (meaning you’ll have your accounts associated with your 24 word recovery phrase and then a separate set of accounts associated with the passphrase).

In order to access these different accounts, you’ll be using your PIN (the 24 word recovery phrase will have a different PIN than your passphrase-associated accounts).

To answer your question over starting up a fresh device – you’ll be prompted to enter a new PIN however you’ll want to follow our documentation with respect to restoring passphrase accounts ([here](https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/4983095135261-How-to-recover-your-passphrase-accounts-?support=true) is a link for reference).

I’ll break this down into steps as well so it’s a bit more clear:

      1. Get your 24 word recovery phrase and your passphrase.
      2. [Restore](https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/4404382560913-Restore-your-Ledger-accounts-with-your-recovery-phrase?support=true) your 24 word recovery phrase into your Ledger device.
      3. Press and hold both buttons on the Ledger for about 4 seconds to enter the „control center“.
      4. Navigate to „settings“ > „security“ > „passphrase“ > „set up passphrase“.
      5. Select „attach to PIN“.
      6. Choose and confirm the passphrase PIN (this can be a new or old PIN, it doesn’t have to be from the previous passphrase).
      7. Now you’ll enter the **existing** passphrase you used before.
      8. Confirm the passphrase on the physical device.
      9. Now you’ll confirm the passphrase with the current PIN (this would be the PIN from the original set up after you restored the device). The device will display a processing message and then display „**passphrase set**“.
      10. Turn the Ledger device off, turn it back on, and unlock the device using the passphrase PIN you set up.
      11. At this point, you’ll open Ledger Live, go to the accounts tab – and then you’ll be able to add back all of your passphrase-associated accounts from before.

We also have some great [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApDe64H5WIw) documentation for visual reference as will in case you want to follow the process step by step with the video and make sure you’re not missing anything!

Go to the official ledger YouTube – they have a good passphrase tutorial that should be less than 2 years old.

There’s a guy with a French accent that does a great job explaining this and more and is a more trustworthy source than randos on Reddit.

Yeah, you’re pretty much correct with everything but you will have to set up the 24 word phrase first, then enter the “25th word” passphrase after. Same set up as the original.

You just set up the additional passphrase „25 word“ again, the same way you created it originally. Then you can access those accounts gain.
