I’ve bought one Cryptosteel, 2 Billfodl, and made my own with an engraver, a bolt and nut, and some washers.

The Cryptosteel is very strong, but the way you secure the letters is weird, and you can’t read them. Which might be a feature if someone were to find it

The Billfodl is easy to read but super stiff and difficult to open. But I like it better.

The bolt, nut, and washers are cheap. But I haven’t found a way to make the seed phrase more secure yet. Maybe if I weld them together, but if I need to use the seed phrase, thats gonna be a hassle.

Either way is fine. I like to support companies that make great products so they continue to do so.

I’ve done both, and both are fine. I kind of feel the number conversion on the cryptosteel is maybe a tad better, but it won’t stop anyone with half a brain.

The problem is anyone with half a brain will find the other half with all that huge “CRYPtOSTEEL” branding all over the plates. Why advertise exactly what you are to thieves, on a product that is intended to be hidden from public view, Cryptosteel? I figure maybe they are the ones missing half a brain 🙄

That’s what I did. $15 for stainless steel dog-tags and I have something just as resilient, bonus mine isn’t made of dozens of tiny letters that will fall everywhere if the device bends or cracks.

I actually found I preferred using a Tungsten engraving pen to scratch the letters on instead of letter punching. It was much easier.

One guy used steel/zinc electrical box cover plate from Home Depot…was super cheap and survived torture test including blazing fire. Any steel or titanium plate would work here. Engrave or punch the seed and keep it safe.

I’m a machinist so I cut 316 plates, drilled and tapped them so they bolt together and engraved em. They weigh about 900g ea won’t rust or burn.

Looks good and easy to use. A $10-15 solution does the same technically. For me it was worth the $70 because I like it pretty 😉

Betty of those products it’s the type of metal used and its resistance to fire. Last thing you want is a piece of tin melting in a fire so that your key is lost forever.

I bought a few metal cards and a metal engraver…it was much easier than when I tried using the letter punches. Plus if I ever need to get rid of the card I can use the engraver (with a bigger bit) to scratch out the words

Yes, cryptosteel it total overkill. I can not remember having heard of a single case where the only copy of a crypto seed survived a burned house only because it was kept on crypto steel. It’s just a theoretical risk that almost never materializes. But it’s always a good idea to keep the seed separate from the hard ware wallet. This case if you lose either of the two, you can still access your funds.

I got crypto steel only because it looks cool, but yeah, not really needed. Much more important to keep it in a truly secure place where noone but you can access it.
