So – you can send your coins to the external wallet (ledger) the same way you can send coins to another exchange – easy.

Unfortunately this means that you cannot then use the coins to stake on that exchange – because they are transferred. This would be like asking a bank for interest on money that you have in a safe at home – ofc not/fuck off they would say

You can however use other applications via MetaMask etc & your ledger to then stake in other places (often with better rates) in DEXs.

The reason people advocate for this is that they are decentralised. If you use a centralised exchange like Binance (mine) then they are storing all your crypto and can do wtf they want with it and have an account with your name on it they allow you to access. Like a normal bank. People in crypto dont like that because if they get hacked (big target)/banned/remove you’re country/cancel your account/add more restrictions you’re screwed. On the flip side they are big companies/often user friendly/often decent security

DexS are decentralised meaning there is no middleman- your funds/wallets interact with each other directly to stake/lend/borrow etc. This is the crypto wet dream
Can come with great rewards and not the same risks as above but risks of scams/hacks/rugpulls/bit confusing/hard to use when starting out

      Hope that’s useful

u/The_N00ch answered your staking question well. I’ll just add a few things to it for your general crypto journey:

      1. Don’t „consider“ buying a hardware wallet. Buy it. You have coins on an exchange right now. Exchanges can get hacked or more likely your credentials to the exchange can get compromised. You’ll eventually graduate to doing other things in the crypto space like u/The_N00ch mentioned. You’ll be using dApps and all of that which will require a wallet and you’ll be all excited and create a MetaMask hot wallet (wallet exposed to the internet). It will work out okay for a while but then your computer will be compromised and all of your funds will be cleaned out.
      2. „I want all of my coins in one location“. It’s important to understand that coins and tokens exist on blockchains and no where else. They don’t exist at Coinbase, Kucoin, MetaMask, your Ledger, your computer, or underneath your mom’s left titty for safekeeping. The only thing that Coinbase, Kucoin, MetaMask, your Ledger, your computer, or the underneath of your mom’s left titty holds is the private key to a public address that has coins or tokens mapped to it. When you use an exchange, you don’t possess that key. They are in custodial accounts. When you use MetaMask as a hot wallet, they key is encrypted on your local computer. When you use Ledger, the key exists on your Ledger hardware; it was created there, never left there, and will never leave there unless you give someone your 24 word pass phrase.
      3. Take about an hour and read all the articles on http://www.ledger.com/academy

P.s have a look at Beefy finance – regarded as as about as safe as it gets – can get higher rewards elsewhere but with increasing complexity/risk

      https://docs.beefy.finance/moo/ecosystem/introduction – info

Link to app itself – https://www.beefy.finance/

Remember if you get a ledger to set it up brand new/not use an old seed phrase – if/when you’re interested in that I’ll copy/paste comments on that if it’s of interest

      Cheers
