If there is a chain fork as a result of SegWit2x and both chains appear to be viable, we will add support for both of them. We consider a chain to be viable if it is getting a sustaining amount of hash power and is being supported by exchanges.
Unless Segwit2x changes some things before the fork, it is likely to be an unsafe fork. There is not enough information available at this time to answer conclusively. The BCH fork was made safe about a week before it happened. Still, almost everyone (including KeepKey) was conservative and stopped transactions. We will not prevent users from performing transactions; we will make a strong recommendation.
We won’t consider it „safe“ again until there is a good story for splitting or replay prevention.
