Crypto is not stored on the device

You would need an update if you use a blockchain that implemented a breaking change, which would require a hardware update. There is a very small chance for something like this to happen. Otherwise, you can use „outdated“ software.

Your cryptos are not stored in your ledger, they are stored on the blockchains. The only thing stored in your ledger is your 24 word recovery / seed phrase.

What you should store in your safe is your seed phrase, it is not useful to store your ledger device in a safe.

Nano s plus has no battery so not much to die. USB isnt going to go extinct anytime soon and will always be available across many devices. Typical apps on the ledger do not require updates regularly, you can leave it for years and not worry about it. And yeah as others have said, your crypto is on the blockchain, not on this device. This device simply holds the keys to access your crypto.

I have the nano s plus and love this thing. Very little to go wrong. Connects directly to my android via ledger live app too. Most of the time its just sitting around.

Yes you will spend hours updating and doing reboots for the ledger to work properly.

So take it out of the safe once a year. Why make your life difficult.

At some point old hardware won’t be compatible or supported anymore. Just check the Ledger website once a year to see if they are still pushing updates for your S Plus (I mean they are still supporting their Nano S after 6-7 years?). Either way, the seed is all you need to access your crypto even if Ledger abandons us.

Well, after 3 years there most likely will be a lot of changes and new updates will be available for your Ledger Nano S Plus. Apart from that, if you are still holding your 24-word recovery phrase, you will always be able to access your funds with this Ledger device or another one.
