I wouldn’t trust anyone personally. I ordered mine from Ledger directly and like you live in a different country and it was fine.
Ledger does check if it’s genuine when you first use it and you can wipe it and generate your seed as many times as you want until you feel comfortable.

This is nonsense. It is not possible to tamper with the secure element – doing so will destroy the device. There are no tampered Ledger devices „in the wild“. As mentioned previously, just order it from Ledger or an authorized reseller (there’s a list on Ledger.com).
When you receive the Ledger device download Ledger Live from [Ledger.com](https://Ledger.com) (and **only** [Ledger.com](https://ledger.com)), connect the device and carefully follow the instructions. Ledger Live will verify the device.
Your 24 word recovery phrase will be displayed on the device – write it down carefully and store it securely.
**Never enter the recovery phrase anywhere except the device.**
In the extremely unlikely event the recovery phrase cards that come with the device have anything written on them, simply throw them away and reset the device by entering a random PIN 3 times. Then follow the instructions in Ledger Live.

Technically, as long as the Ledger device passes the [genuine check](https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/4404389367057-Is-my-Ledger-device-genuine-?docs=true) portion of the setup, and you yourself generate your own [24 word recovery phrase](https://www.ledger.com/academy/crypto/what-is-a-recovery-phrase) – the device is absolutely safe to use.
In this case it’s a bit up to your preference and whether you would like to order the device versus purchasing it from a 3rd party, however the most important aspect in either case is that **you generate your own 24 word recovery phrase when you set the Ledger up**.
Apart from that, it will automatically be verified during the genuine check and if anything has been tampered with, the [Ledger Live](https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live) software will tell you – and you’ll know not to use the device.
Remember, Ledger Live will NEVER ask users to enter their 24 word recovery phrase into the application. If you ever see this, then you know it’s a scam and it should be ignored and reported to us at our official Ledger Support page, [here](https://support.ledger.com/).

I live in the US and custom opened my package when I got mine. Everything was opened and he/she didn’t even put the damn thing back into the box neatly. I contacted Ledger but they didn’t want to send me another. I was going to appeal the charge with the credit card company but decided not to. So far I have been using it for a few years and nothing happened, but it’s still a big risk. If this happens again, I would definitely appeal the charge though.
